Frisco’s 16th Annual Barbecue Challenge

Published by david at 10:02 pm under Events

Texans may make claim on the venerable tradition of barbeque, but the town of Frisco, Colorado is ready to give Texas a run for the sauce! This 2009 summer marks the 16th year of Frisco’s Annual BBQ Challenge, also known as BBQ With Altitude! You won’t want to miss BBQ Rocky Mountain style. The festivities make for one fantastic way to spend Father’s Day weekend! It all starts at noon on Friday, June 19th and runs on through Saturday night of the 20th, 2009. Your nose and taste buds are in for some incredible sensations as some 60 teams from all across the nation arrive to compete for over $15,000 in prizes! It’s not just for the pros though. Everybody gets in on the culinary action. You’ll find backyard grills, smokers and barrels all over Main Street, and that’s just for starters! Live music starts at 6 pm on Friday the 19th. Come Saturday, the party continues with a pancake breakfast from 6 to 9 am. From 10 til 5 pm, you can get your licks in on the barbecued delights being sold. This weekend is a family affair, a country picnic with tons of things for kids of all ages to do. Pig racing starts at 10 am and ends up at 4 pm. There’s a “Kid’s Kook-off” contest, as well. Live music starts at 2 pm. A Bouncy Castle will be set up for the kids to play in. Saturday at 4:30, Marcia Ball will be giving a two hour concert. The awards ceremony begins at 3:30, and prizes will be awarded at that time.

Mountain folk get pretty creative when it comes to Barbecue. There’ll be plenty of beef and pork, ribs and shredded for sandwiches. Don’t you worry about that. Some of the participants get a bit more exotic, though, with barbecued tofu for the vegetarians and alligator for the cajuns (and anyone else who likes a finger-lickin’ good time!) After the Awards Ceremony begins, attendees can enjoy happy hour (sponsored by Miller Lite) at participating restaurants and pubs til midnight. You’ll even get a dollar discount when you reuse your plastic drink cups! Last year, over 22,000 people enjoyed the food and fixin’s, and the town made just under $60,000 for the Chamber of Commerce and the Colorado Restaurant Association’s Education Fund, which funds ProSTart high school programs in culinary education, proving scholarships for continuing education for aspiring chefs. Come on down, savor the sauces, have a really great time, and help grow the next generation of culinary wizardry! For contact info, or to get an application to compete, visit www.townoffrisco.com
