Copper Mountain Half Marathon

Published by david at 3:08 am under Events

Copper Mountain’s Half Marathon has become famous amongst runners for the high-altitude challenge. The starting line is at 9,400 feet, with the course topping out at Vail Pass’ 10,600 feet! That’s a lot of vertical for anyone, but it didn’t stop Denver’s Nicholas Mockeridge, who broke the course record by over seven minutes! This year’s Half is run on August 22, 2009, and as of this date, registration is open. Visit Copper Mountain Marathon Registration

The Half Marathon starts and finishes at Copper Mountain Resort Village (80 miles west of downtown Denver on I-70) with the 5k beginning at 9 am, and the 12k starting off at 9:30 am. There are also Walk and kids’ events. Registration includes your Race Goodie Bag, a Timing Chip, exclusive access to Copper Mountain’s roads and the ASATF-certified course, finish-line snacks and beverages, live music on the weekend of the race, instant results posting and online access to those results.

Awards are given to the top three males and females in each of the age divisions (determined by the runner’s age on the day of the race.) Timing is done by Chip; The runner’s time starts when he or she reaches the starting line, rather than when the start gun is fired, so a runner’s time is calculated precisely, after crossing the fnish line. Water will be made available at any of the several first aid stations, placed approximately 2 miles apart, and at the finish line. Medical teams will be patroling the course as well. Brightroom is taking event photos, so be sure to have you rrace number visible on teh front of your body at all times and smile a lot!

Copper Mountain’s climate is ideal for running. The elevation keeps things considerably cooler than they’d be most other places in the country. Of course, training for the difference in elevation is essential. Copper Mountain makes for a great marathon challenge, but that’s only part of the story. After the race, there’s plenty to do and see while you’re experiencing the Rocky Mountains. Of course, there’s a post-race festival, and you can ride the lift up the mountain, play miniature golf, ride go-karts, rent a bike and go for a ride, and much, much more! Whether to run, walk or watch, plan on being there for the 2009 Copper Half Marathon!
